My other update

Just unloading here.  Sigh.  It looks like my guy Huck has cancer.

He's in surgery today, biopsy to follow.

Thyroid cancer.  Quite rare in dogs, accounting for less than 2% of tumors.  Very aggressive.

Jay is learning his body parts.  I hear his voice say, "Eye.  Eye."  I look down and Jay's fat little finger is jammed under Huck's eyelid, up to the end of Jay's finger.  Good boy, Huck.  Just stood there serving as an eye model for his brother.

Children before the children.  Only you guys get what these animals mean to us.  Hard to get understanding on this side of the keyboard.

Just a dog.  Yeah, sort of.

  6. I am so sorry. My doggy seems to have had an epileptic attack recently and I also mourn for the days when is is gone. Hope your baby recovers soon from surgery and all goes well.

  7. I'm very sorry to hear about your boy, Huck. What a sweet pup you have there. And of course, his sweet face is one I will always associate with you, since he is the face of Roccie in blogland.
Yes, the children before our children. Not just a dog. A sweet, loyal soul who has seen you through some dark nights and days.
I am sorry he is sick, Roccie. I send you my warmest thoughts.

  8. So very sorry to hear this, Huck sounds like a wonderful member of the family. Dogs are the best aren't they? But damn losing them is the absolute worst and so painful. Thinking of you all and holding hope he'll be okay.

  9. Never just a dog! Our pups have soaked up a lot of tears with their furry little necks, and we have repaid them with love and the best care possible. I hope Huck's prognosis is better than you expect. My mom, a.k.a. Grandma Dog to our pup, had her thyroid removed this year due to a 2.5 cm cancer, and is doing well on just a single thyroid med. A one time oral dose of radioactive iodine is anticipated to clean up any of the cancer that may have spread. I hope it's that simple with your sweet boy.

  10. I hope your Vet studied with Libby. Huckle is a sweet dog and needs to conquer this cancer like a pesky chipmunk.

  12. I understand. He's not just a dog. I lost my St.Bernard to bone cancer (very aggressive), and she was my world. She saw sides of me during IF treatments and failures that no human being did. She hung on during my pregnancy (thank God, I don't know what would have happened to my twins if she died before I had them), and waited for the preemies to come home. It just wasn't fair. I'm very sorry.

  13. Roxie, I haven't posted in forever (or caught up) but you crossed my mind last night and I decided to check in. Lots to catch up on! Congratulations on your pregnancy - sending lots of hopeful (and cautious of course) good thoughts your way.

My dog Oliver had thyroid cancer last year. He had a fully encapsulated tumor they found on ultrasound, and we decided to do the surgery. They found another undetected tumor when they opened him up. They removed them both, and we found out later the margins were clear and his prognosis was good. Here we are, nine months later, he's on thyroid replacement hormones but other than that he's doing great. I didn't see an update from you about Huck, but I hope he's doing okay. If not, I'm so sorry. I totally understand how hard this is - and no, they're never "just" our dogs. Much love.
