Father, don't forget the Infertile

My church asked the mothers to stand today.  The priest called all the moms down around the altar for a special blessing.  I was sitting upstairs, but you can bet I busted my ass to get down there to be a part of it.

I included everyone in the mom's prayers.  The church's version felt a little exclusionary.  I noticed certain women who remained seated.  I made sure we were all included in the blessing with the version in my head.

You don't need a baby in the crib to be a Momma.  You just want one.

On the way out I waited in the long line to ask Father Jack to say some special prayers for the Fertically Challenged.  He gave me an auto response affirming he would, then it seemed to click with him.  He repeated himself, saying he would pray and gave me a real promise to do so, looking me in the eye and hearing my request.

  5. I went to a newly ordained priest's first Mass yesterday at our local parish. It was cool on two counts: first I remember seeing this young man growing up. He was in high school when my daughter was in junior high. Second, he actually mentioned the cross of infertility in his homily! It is rare to hear a priest give voice to this, let alone in a homily, let alone in a priest's first ever homily!

  6. Each week at my church they play a video testimony. On Mother's Day they played one with an older lady, who talked about how she had dreamed of having a large family but received a medical diagnosis that meant she couldn't have any. She and her husband have a 'dinner ministery' to international college students...
I sat there weeping, thankful that the church had selected a video that showed the breadth of 'motherhood' in the Kingdom.
